Storm Daniel 2023
Hi Supportstorm, I was just wondering if Daniel is getting it's Meteorological path on it's own page instead of it being just on the worldwide map. 2A02:C7E:4C33:BF00:AC80:28BD:815E:EE8E 16:24, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
- The track is my own assessment until more "official" track is made available. Due to Wiki policies I won't upload it separately. I will attempt to extract positions from OPC and UKMET sources but will not contain intensity or classifications. Supportstorm (talk) 21:07, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
Post-Tropical Tracks
Hello, could you possibly update the tracks with the new colors with the post-tropical track data you have on the old-color maps? Or otherwise, share the source for the EX track? Thanks, AveryTheComrade (talk) 22:28, 23 September 2023 (UTC)

| Hello, Supportstorm.
I am Lucille Sodipe, a reporter for Agence France-Presse. I just want to ask if you could direct me to where you sourced the HDF Files for the image of Typhoon Haiyan you processed in 2013? https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Haiyan_2013-11-07_1345Z_(alternate,_borderless).png The link on the page doesn't seem to work. I am writing an article about a false typhoon warning circulating in the Philippines which has misused your work. Thank you for your time. My email is lucille.sodipe@afp.com LSODIPE (talk) 02:25, 21 November 2023 (UTC) |
- That link is outdated. You can find the TERRA satellite data for that day on LAADS using this link: https://ladsweb.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/archive/allData/61/MOD021KM/2013/311/. You may need to sign in to download data and have the appropriate data viewer to open it. It will not look like the image I made as it is a composite of two channel 31 granules overlaid on a background map. Since the typhoon is so iconic, I'm not terribly surprised it's being misrepresented in false news. It's fairly common thing to see honestly. Supportstorm (talk) 17:56, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
1976-1987 EPAC tracks
Excuse me with all due respect, it will be difficult to re-analyze, update and standardize the trajectories of tropical cyclones during 1976 to 1987, it seems to me that the information on tropical cyclones is very scarce because they belong to the Eastern Pacific Hurricane Center (EPHC) until 1988 .Tropical cyclone archives only exist at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) from 1988 and 1982 from the Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC). Will it be possible to reanalyze the trajectory of tropical cyclones in the East Pacific from 1976 to 1987, the barometric pressure of which is mostly unknown until the winds as well? Color change
I have noticed that you have reverted my changes on some pages. Are the files saved in the archives? I did not save them so I would have to completety remake all track maps and it would take extremely long to remake the maps. Thank you! 2003 LN6 (talk) 22:41, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, every file upload is saved, so you may download them again if you hadn't saved a local version. I also recommend you use the project track maker. Not only will the files look correct, but it runs in a few seconds. Just to save you time if you were manually creating tracks previously. Supportstorm (talk) 22:46, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
Error in the 2023 EPac summary
I noticed that when you were updating the file with TCRs you accidentally put the track of Eugene 2017, instead of the 2023 iteration, in the summary map. I thought i'd notify you so it could be fixed. Sria-72 (talk) 01:59, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
- Ope! Thanks for pointing that out. I'll update the maps shortly. Supportstorm (talk) 05:14, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

Updates needed for U.S. tornado tracks
I hate to bother you, but some updates were made on tornadoes occurred from 2017 onward and your maps of all the U.S. tornado tracks from those years needs to be updated. Can you please do so? ChessEric (talk) 18:24, 7 June 2024 (UTC)
- That's the plan, to update past years maps, but since it's been so active lately I can only focus on 2024 tornadoes. Also doesn't help that most of my free time lately has actually been performing some of the surveys... Supportstorm (talk) 20:25, 8 June 2024 (UTC)
GIS tornado track data source
Hi Storm,
I'm working on maps of tornado tracks in the U.S. for years prior to 2018 (where your excellent maps begin), and I was curious about where your precise tornado tracks come from. I'm currently using the 1950–2022 tornado paths shapefile from https://www.spc.noaa.gov/gis/svrgis/, which displays all paths as straight lines between the start and end points. I notice your tracks actually correspond to the true tornado paths shown on the Damage Assessment Toolkit, but seem to include tornadoes that aren't present on there. If your data source is public and shareable I would love to use it for the pre-2018 maps!
Best, Penitentes (talk) 17:27, 13 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi! The data I use is curated with many different sources, so there's no one GIS dataset you can pull off the internet. The DAT will get you most of the detailed tracks but not all and is missing many tracks as you mention. NCEI/SPC is full of errors that I have to cross-reference and coordinate changes with NCEI when possible, not to mention that landspout tornadoes are sometimes grouped under SVR thunderstorm wind events. I also add a significant amount of metadata to each tornado so that it may be used on the TornadoArchive and my research, which is the main reason I'm slow at updating maps. Your maps look really clean though! Encourages me to spend more time making my maps look nicer when I get a chance. Supportstorm (talk) 13:25, 14 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply! I spent ages trying to compare DAT/Tornado Archive/SPC databases for any given year to see whether one of them was all-inclusive and eventually came to the conclusion that you must be doing some good synthesis. I hadn't been aware before of how much work you were doing to clean and assemble that data, so I take my hat off to you. We're very lucky to have you adding this value to Wikipedia! Penitentes (talk) 14:52, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
- Oh thanks! It's a bit of work yes. Hopefully with DAT being integrated with NCEI storm data "soonish", we'll have most offices inputting all their tornado tracks in there, making this task way easier. Supportstorm (talk) 20:24, 21 June 2024 (UTC)

Hi:
I see you were updating this file. I think it should be updated further as File:Debby 2024 path.png is. Thanks.
Pierre cb (talk) 22:04, 13 August 2024 (UTC)
- I've finished updating Debby's track since, well, it's already dissipated. Based on WPC 3-hourly weather charts, the original circulation became more of a trough over Newfoundland, with multiple centers, and the eastern portion became dominant. So the path file is incorrect since the original was not the one that eventually moved into the open Atlantic. Supportstorm (talk) 23:36, 13 August 2024 (UTC)
- Well FUB/German weather service were still calling it a separate low according to https://page.met.fu-berlin.de/wetterpate/static/archiv/2024/Analyse_20240812.gif and https://page.met.fu-berlin.de/wetterpate/static/archiv/2024/Analyse_20240813.gif merging after that with another Atlantic main low pressure. But you juge. Pierre cb (talk) 02:12, 14 August 2024 (UTC)
- I saw that. However, DWD doesn't have the same authority as the WPC/OPC do in those waters. NHC usually cuts tracks after the center becomes diffused like Debby's did over Newfoundland, so I'm fairly confident in ending the track where I did. Supportstorm (talk) 03:57, 14 August 2024 (UTC)

Hey, you have an image of all tornadoes of 2024 on the article with the same name. The elkhorn, NE tornado is marked as an EF3. It has since been upgraded to an EF4 in the last couple weeks, so if you’re up for it, the track needs to me updated to a red color to signify EF4 2600:1014:B1E2:8E4:F94A:8BF0:88EC:2FA2 06:09, 19 August 2024 (UTC)

Image sourcing help
Hi there, Supportstorm! I'd like to thank you for the work you've done with tropical cyclone-related uploads. I recently used some of your satellite imagery uploads when creating a timeline for the 1995 Pacific hurricane season over at the English Wikipedia, where it is currently a featured list candidate. Unfortunately, the source links don't seem to work, which is an issue that has been highlighted by one of the reviewers. Is there an easier way to access the sources, especially in the cases of File:Cosme 1995-07-19 1832Z.png and File:Ismael 1995-09-14 1745Z.png? WPAC Best Track HURDAT2 Format
Hello, For some of the WPAC storms, I have noticed that their best track in the track map generator input code is in the HURDAT2 format. I am wondering how to generate the best track for any WPAC storm in the HURDAT2 format using Cygwin64 (which I have downloaded). I have limited knowledge in programming, so step-by-step instructions would be helpful, if possible. Thank you. 184.145.51.231 17:31, 14 August 2024 (UTC)
- Assuming you have followed the guide on the track generator page and it's compiled on your system, all you have to do is have an input file with the hurdat2 formatted track and make sure there is a storm header at the end of the file. It doesn't matter what header is there, but there is a bug in the code that requires one to accept the input file in that format. If you are asking how I convert atcf to hurdat2 format, I've written a python script to do that. I could share it on my github if that's what you're looking for. Supportstorm (talk) 22:33, 14 August 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, I’m more or less asking how to convert ATCF to HURDAT2 format. If you could share that, that would be wonderful. Much appreciation. 184.145.51.231 00:19, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
- If you could also link your github page that would be helpful. 184.145.51.231 00:25, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
- Sure, here's a link to the script. https://github.com/RavenV-tiff/ATCFtoHURDAT2 I have a short description on how to use it in the readme file, but if you have any questions let me know. Supportstorm (talk) 16:08, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
- It works like a charm. Thank you for sharing the script. Many of the track map generator input codes also have data from JMA and OPC in addition to JTWC, so I’m curious how those data sources would be incorporated into the script and to generate a .txt file containing data combined from JTWC, JMA, OPC, etc. 184.145.51.231 05:07, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
- No problem! Any data not in ATCF files needs to be added manually either before or after running the script. So, JMA and OPC data would need to be sourced by other means. Supportstorm (talk) 13:01, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
- I’ve been able to find JMA best track data, but any idea what the link to OPC best track data would be? 184.145.51.231 17:20, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, I don't have a public source for OPC chart positions. I have a round about way of getting the lat/lon elements of the charts through AWIPS and a public EDEX. The next best thing is reprojecting the chart on a map or if a system is near CONUS you can find the high resolution positions from WPC products. Supportstorm (talk) 22:41, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
- ATCF best track files pre-2005 from the JTWC website don’t work in the ATCF to HURDAT2 script, as there looks to be missing data in the files, especially pre-2001. Is there any way to find more complete ATCF data (such as the data in the code box for VERA 1959, and the data that led to the HURDAT2 format in the code boxes for NANCY 1961 and ZEB 1998)? Thank you for all your help. 184.145.51.231 17:57, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
- I'll need to modify the code to accommodate missing data in the older files. The stuff I did with those older storms was manual, but I don't think the format of the atcf files should change much for those. It'll take me a few weeks to revisit the code as it's not really high priority for me at the moment, but I'll message when it's done. Supportstorm (talk) 13:13, 10 September 2024 (UTC)

Uploading and updating tropical cyclone tracks on Wikimedia Commons
Hello Supportstorm, Firstly I would like to appreciate your effort regarding uploading and updating many of the tropical cyclone path images seen around Wikipedia. Recently I have been interested in updating some of the older tracks to the newer version of IBTrACS data. One of those particular storms was Cyclone Tracy, which hasn't had its track updated in over 10 years. I had written the IBTrACS data for Tracy in HURDAT2 format and used it in WSL (WPTC Track Maker) to generate the new image of the path. However I do not know where to start from there as I am new to uploading such things. I had also tried making a new path for an ongoing storm, Hurricane Milton, but I got a message stating that I didn't have permission to overwrite a file, and thought it was due to my limitations on user rights.
Is it fine to ask how to fill in the details regarding new path images, especially about copyright (or rather public domain), track data, sources and so on? I wish to renew some of the older tracks and update it to its current HURDAT2 or IBTrACS versions. Once again, thank you for putting in the effort to update many of the TC tracks around Wikipedia, and good day to you. (Apologies if my grammar is incorrect as English is not my native language.) Elida Rubielle (Astradia) (talk) 18:52, 8 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the kind words! I believe there are privileges you need to have in order to override files. I'm not sure the criteria but it may be after a certain amount of time and edits can you apply for it. I joined before that rule was enacted so I'm not sure the details. Regarding updating plots I would caution against just replacing tracks with the IBTrACS consensus data. The way I've been doing things is to source the main tracking data from JTWC and supplement it with RSMC data for extra-tropical phases. The idea is it keeps most tracks consistent worldwide (keep sources that adhere to 1-min winds, like JTWC/NHC, when possible) while allowing ET phase to be present, which the JTWC doesn't include. Exceptions do happen so best judgement is needed in some cases. Copyright should always be public domain and is baked into the track template so no modification of that is needed. Supportstorm (talk) 22:53, 8 October 2024 (UTC)
- That's fair, I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for the help/advice! Elida Rubielle (Astradia) (talk) 12:03, 10 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Supportstorm and Elida Rubielle (Astradia):
- First of all:
- thanks a lot Supportstorm for your track maps!
- Elida Rubielle (Astradia): you need some rights to be able to override a file:
- It's described while attempting overwriting through the link "Upload a new version of this file" at the bottom of "File history", as a refusal happens.
- Your upload being discarded, you get information how to be able to do the job.
- You can then request appropriate rights to have permission to overwrite this specific file name.
- Yours, En rouge (talk) 18:56, 12 October 2024 (UTC)
How you removed Bordors and Line's?
Hi @Supportstorm i would like to know you removed Borders and Line's like on File:Tsbret2005.jpg 216.147.122.243 00:11, 13 October 2024 (UTC)
- I simply stretched the vertical and horizontal pixels next to the lines to cover the grid lol. I would not recommend you do the same and instead find the original satellite file or other higher quality source if you want a border and gridless image. Extratropical storm data

Full track data source
- Hi @Supportstorm:
- As written above: thanks a lot for your track maps!
- From some months (years) I'm trying to find data for european storms tracks.
- These days, I've seen you are able to track Kirk further than the NHC data file can provide.
- Here is my question:
- where do you find best-track data for Kirk (even after transition from Kirk to ex-Kirk)?
- Here are my wishes, my own future actions:
- to be able to generate storm-tracks, including european parts of:
- ex-Zeta (2020) / Zeta 2020-10-29
- ex-Lorenzo (2019) / Lorenzo 2019-09-23
- ex-Leslie (2018) / Leslie 2018-09-23
- ex-Helene (2018) / Helene 2018-09-07
- So, I need a source of data, with best tracks for these ex-hurricanes
- Moreover, optionnaly, to be able to generate tracks, for european-only storms.
- Note: I'm aware of WPTC as I've downloaded/compiled/tested map generation: it's OK!
- Yours, En rouge (talk) 23:27, 12 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for the kind words. Unfortunately there's no easy way of extracting data for European wind storms. All the storms you listed (except Kirk) should have a best track from the NHC. If the storm kept a closed circulation as an extratropical system the NHC should have tracked it, if not it's a separate system. For any other storm that was not tropical, they were usually tracked on weather charts. So, to extract information from these archived weather charts you will need to reproject the map on to a coordinate system to reliably extract center location and pressures. There are a few methods for this but the easiest is to use OpenCPN and the plugin Weatherfax. This program allows you to either use internet sources in real-time or fit a map from a local image. It has bit of a learning curve so you will need to experiment to find the right settings for a map. Otherwise, there are no best track files except for the work NCDC and NMC did for Storm Data back in the 60s through 90s and the work David Roth has done maintaining a sort of best track database, both of which or more North America focused even though there is some overlap with Europe. Supportstorm (talk) 13:37, 17 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Supportstorm:
- Thanks for your response and tools names.
- Thanks for your information you're using maps rather than data file.
- Data sources was my priority question.
- So here are map sources I know:
- German ULB/DWD analysis's maps, but:
- (--) one day time resolution
- (-) not great precision for lat/lon map values (due to projection)
- (--) not great precision for depression lat/lon values (only isobars, no drawn center)
- (++) history of past files, directly with appropriate URL
- English MetOffice analysis's maps, but:
- (--) one day time resolution
- (-) no great precision for lat/lon map values (due to projection, but lower resolution than German's one)
- (-) no great precision for depression lat/lon values (but a drawn tick => better than German's one above)
- (+) history of past files, but not easy to access (must be done manually at this time)
- Spanish AEMet analysis's maps, but:
- (--) one day time resolution
- (-) not great precision for lat/lon map values (due to projection)
- (--) not great precision for depression lat/lon values (only isobars, no drawn center)
- (--) history of past files, but only for last 3-4 days
- German ULB/DWD analysis's maps, but:
- So,
- are you manually pointing the storm position (when out of track provided by NHC)?
- can I have information about maps's sources you use?
- as I can see, MetOffice' maps are the most appropriate I've found:
- do you have some script to retrieve maps from UK MetOffice?
- Thanks for your support,

Update on Tornadoes of 2024 map
Hey @Supportstorm I recently viewed the Tornadoes of 2024 article and saw how it was last changed a few days ago on the 22nd with a couple of new notable EF3 tornadoes tallying it up from the last edit I could remember of 32 to 36. Really amazing job that you keep track on these tornadoes time to time.
But I'd like to let you know that you've missed to tally one extra such tornado. Quite a while ago there has been a tornado near Robert Lee, TX in Coke County on May 3rd that was re-rated from EF1 to EF3. Not a huge deal but it adds one extra to the tally and make the total of such rated tornadoes to 37 as of writing this.

- Yeah I did miss that change, same with the Lincoln, NE tornado split. Thank you pointing that out and I've gone ahead and corrected the file. With Hurricane Helene taking down NCEI for a month, I am still using preliminary data for most of May-July until I can get caught back up. Supportstorm (talk) 01:09, 26 October 2024 (UTC)
File:2024 tropical cyclone summary map.png requires updating
Hi Supportstorm,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed File:2024 tropical cyclone summary map.png is out of date. Could you update it? Thanks again. Hurricane Clyde 🌀my talk page! 19:47, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
1902 Pacific typhoon season
I recently created the wiki page 1902 Pacific typhoon season, and I saw your track maps. I just want to ask: how did you find the speed information for the maps? TheNuggeteer (talk) 12:51, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- There's no wind speed information, however the colors in the maps are being used as minimum category represented in the NCDC TD9636 data. TD: below 34kt TS: 34-63kt TY: 64 kt and greater.-Supportstorm (talk) 14:38, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry for taking so long–and thank you for replying, I'm going to check the NCDC data (I don't yet know what that is). TheNuggeteer (talk) 08:11, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
- You're welcome :). It's a dataset in IBTrACS. The column TD9636 STAGE has codes that indicate which stage the storm is. Here is the document that tells you what the codes mean: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/sites/g/files/anmtlf171/files/2024-06/IBTrACS%20v04r01%20column%20documentation.pdf Supportstorm (talk) 23:54, 3 December 2024 (UTC)

19th century typhoons
Where did you get their track maps? Just asking, since you were responsible for the track maps in 1880s Pacific typhoon seasons and there's no IBTrACS data. Norbillian (talk) 16:45, 9 January 2025 (UTC)
- The tracks come from the coordinate locations found in this book https://archive.org/details/cu31924024041935. I believe all I did was a linear interpolation to fill in the 6 hour positions between the 12 hour locations. Supportstorm (talk) 23:18, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
Polar2Grid
Hi there. I'm running over a problem where I can't seem to use gdal_merge.py to merge 2 images, with the other crossing over the IDL. The images in question involve Cyclone Alfred on Feb 28 with the raw NOAA-20 data files from NASA. I also run into this problem when I use CLASS data. Do you know any solution into this? 👦 13:50, 8 March 2025 (UTC)
- Update: I used gdal_warp instead of gdal_merge. It worked flawlessly. 👦 11:45, 28 May 2025 (UTC)
Track combination conundrum
Hi there, so, in 1984 WPac, there are two storms, 23W and 24W (Thad). On IBTRACS, they are combined into one storm, however JTWC keeps them as 2 seperate storms. In JMA's best track data, it doesn't include the points that the JTWC considers to be 23W, so I am unsure of what I should even do on track map, much less the article itself. I'm not sure whether to combine the two storms into 1 track map and 1 infobox on the article, or should I keep them seperate and move 23W to the "Other systems" section since the JMA doesn't recognize it as a tropical cyclone. Thanks. Sria-72 (talk) 17:45, 31 March 2025 (UTC)
Hi:
There is something that does not fit with the intensity shown on this cyclone track. It seems that you followed IBTRACKS and it shows at maximum Category 1 hurricane equivalent. However, all reports talk about Intense tropical Cyclone (cat. 4 in Saffir-Simpson scale) (see Insurer report). Furthermore, there was reports of gusts up to 250 km/h in La Réunion and 235 km/h in Mauritius (1, 2 and 3) causing extensive damage. This seems to indicate that the category should be upgraded as sustained winds of 130 km/h mentioned in the 1961–62 South-West Indian Ocean cyclone season#Cyclone Jenny article could not produce gusts of double their value.
Could you revise?

WPAC HURDAT2 tracking data
Hi Supportstorm. I've been looking at your Pacific typhoon tracking maps (such as Joan 1959 track.png) and really appreciate the clarity and detail in your work. I noticed that you often include --input WPAC HURDAT 2 in your input code, which suggests you're using a specific data source. I'm also creating similar tracking maps using IBTrACS data, but would like to explore the dataset you're using. Could you point me to where I can access the same file or source? Any guidance would be greatly helpful. Thanks in advance for your time. Leonardo Cirrus (talk) 07:13, 14 December 2025 (UTC)
2025 tornado map
Do you have any plans to create a map of 2025's tornadoes, similar to how you've done them in years prior? OreoStar-fait (talk) 23:44, 6 January 2026 (UTC)
